The Junior Golf Program at Shadow Valley public golf course in Boise, Idaho is fun, instructive and about more than just golf.

My two sons, ages 6 and 8, participated in the Junior Workshop this week at the Shadow Valley public golf course in Boise, Idaho with a dozen other young golf enthusiasts. Led by PGA Head Pro, T.J. Gomez, the youngsters were taught grip, stance, swing and please and thank you. That’s right, courtesy, respect and manners are part of the program.

With his fun loving style, the father that T.J. is was apparent as the juniors began their first lesson by pitching. The pitch shot is used when the player is relatively close to the green but still far enough away to chip or put. The pitch does not require a full back-swing and is therefore a great first shot for new golfers to learn. During this time each child was given personalized attention on their set up and swing and with a gentle tug on an earlobe or pat on the back they were instantly focused and ready to please T.J. with their best exertion. After the kids flooded the practice green with a hundred or so balls, everyone, including T.J., participated in picking them up and dropping them into one mountainous bucket.

Not only did T.J. succeed in teaching the students to well-kept up the area, he also had them huddled and ready for their next lesson-a discussion about concentration and focus in both golf and life. As a parent watching closely that day, I was quietly thanking T.J. for helping reinforce lessons in life that my wife and I work on with our children everyday.

After a break for snacks and to cool off, the kids met at the driving range where they were instructed on how to take a rotund swing. Although the temperature was well into the 90s, the students were having fun and were eager to exhaust their driver, or as my kids call it, their “Big Daddy.” Once again T.J. met with each child individually for instruction, correction and the reminder that most golfers will hit their ball farther and straighter if they use a more proper versus more forceful swing.

The workshop continued for two more days and included chipping, putting and course play. The latter was my celebrated not simply because of the “real play” experience but because I was invited to participate as a parent volunteer. My job was to support one of the groups stay organized and moving along while at the same time enjoying each one of their shots as if all these children were mine. High fives, “Sweet shot!” and “Good try” were shared for all who made the effort as well as lessons on the pre-shot routine. Like brushing your teeth and making your bed before going off to school, a great shot just doesn’t feel right if clear steps aren’t taken beforehand.

While walking between shots T.J. also took the time to talk about the course. Here the students learned how frequently the fairways and greens were mowed, how sprinkler heads are veteran as yardage markers and how lovely the greens are. In fact, part of the lesson was to identify and repair ball marks on the greens which all golfers are responsible for doing as they play. T.J. told the kids this was called etiquette. I am not sure if the kids understood the word, but it was fun watching twelve or so kids scampering around the green looking for indentations to repair as if they found a colony of ants and were mesmerized by the activity unfolding in front of them.

The kids finished their workshop with hot dogs and lemonade and were awarded souvenir caps and balls. As the kids were saying goodbye I realized T.J. had accomplished more than just teaching the kids the fundamentals of golf. He created an atmosphere of fun and achieved the course mission of helping the kids to grow, mature and practice good behavior.

As a result of this experience, and an enthusiastic seek information from from my kids, we signed up as members with the Junior Golf Program. For $40 per year the kids are entitled to a free bucket of range balls per day, reduced green fees and eligibility to play in scrambles and on Family Nights.

Tonight we play in our first scramble but have already been aid to the course each day since our workshop to hit a bucket of balls on the driving range. It is noteworthy that during these times I learned that the courtesy, respect and manners that T.J. worked on with the kids are also seen in the staff at Shadow Valley.

For more information about the Shadow Valley Junior Golf Program call 800-936-7035 or visit the course which is off HWY 55 north of Eagle on the right hand side.

If you’re looking to pick up golf lessons that are well-taught an interactive, I recommend checking out Philadelphia’s golf coach Adz Kozlowski.

According to his website, Adz has helped many Philadelphia golfers improve their skills at a fast rate, being called “one of the finest golf instructors on the East soar,” by Don Brigham, a Life Member PGA of America.

Unlike other coaches who work only with those already intermediate in the golf world, Adz works with anyone regardless of ability, by examining and teaching you skills based on your individual ability and style. For example, Adz eliminates any negative elements you may have when taking a swing in the Impact location, while coaching you to hit the ball further off the tee.

Adz has been a member of the PGA of America since he was 22, and began teaching at a private Monmouth County Club where he built his reputation as an instructor. He’s been teaching golf fundamentals for 20 years, teaches right and left handers and provides all equipment except golf shoes, (although sneakers will do just handsome.) You can split a lesson with a friend or spouse for only $20 extra, and Adz is very flexible in scheduling and splitting up lessons to fit your individual needs.

All lessons are provided at the FDR Golf Course, adjacent to the South Philly sports complexes. The private facility has indoor putting green and two hitting bays, while Adz also uses the outdoor facility when weather is permitting. Outside, golfers will be welcomed by 6,004 yards of terrain, housed in a par-69, Florida-style layout. The indoor and outdoor facilities are located at 1954 Pattison Avenue in Philadelphia, PA.

The programs currently offered during all seasons are as follows:

For $199, enjoy four hours of instruction, including a video analysis of your individual swing, which can be viewed from a home computer. For $279 delight in 6 hours with Adz, including a video lesson and a lesson on the actual course. For $399, enjoy unlimited lessons from Adz, amounting up to one session per week for the entire year.

There are also specific “Golf Improvement Plans” listed on the site, such as “The Platinum Opinion,” which contains 12 hours of one-on-one sessions, plus a video analysis and two instructional DVD’s for $599. Individual fix-it sessions are $80/hour and $45 for a half hour. A playing lesson is $160 and a one hour video lesson is $150.

On his website, you can view and purchase his two instructional DVD’s, one called N’Synch Golf and one called ‘Stroke Savers, which both run at about $19.99. He offers gift certificates and accepts cancellations, as long as they are 24 hours ahead of time.

When golfing it is very important to know what golf shots you need to make regarding your circumstances as well as how to hit the golf shots. If you don’t know this, it will drastically affect your golf game and earn. Practice these approach golf shots and improve your game!

The Pitch Golf Shots

If you’re 60-100 yards away from the green, you need to be using the pitching wedge for pitch golf shots. With your pitching wedge you will have absolute control over how long the ball with travel. The pitching wedge provides much more control than any other club.

When you go to line up a pitch shot, the main point is to open your stance. The ball should be parallel to your abet foot. You want to take a full golf swing with the pitching wedge. Don’t make the mistake of doing a half swing and hammering at the ball. For distance control move your grip closer to the clubhead. Practice this on the driving range to gain this consistent. Also practice finding what distances you can get depending on where your grip is on the club shaft.

The Chip Golf Shots

This is a very effective golf shot. You want to use this chip golf shot when you are 50 yards out to right off the green. Exercise a 7 or 8 iron. The idea is to let the golf ball roll about two thirds of the way to the hole on the green. Place your feet so that the ball is parallel with your assist foot. Keep the majority of your weight on your left side. Do not do a full golf swing. Just go aid halfway in the golf swing. The same is true for the follow through. With practice you’ll be making chip golf shots in no time.

The Flop Shot

This golf shot is difficult and is only used in specific instances. Phil Mickelson is a master at the flop shot. He can hit flop golf shots over a bunker to a tight pin.

You need a 60 degree wedge to do flop golf shots. Status your feet so that the ball is parallel with your back foot. Use an inaugurate stance. The idea is to gather the ball to soar straight up so it clears whatever hazard is in front of you, but will land and stop immediately.

To achieve any of these golf shots consistently you will need to practice. Yes practice does do perfect.

Despite the science alive to in the game and it’s being developed into a million dollar industry, golf may seem nothing more but swinging your club, hitting the ball and making certain it goes inside the hole. But most people don’t realize that the swing in golf is one of the most complicated execution that any sport could require.

When we speak of golf, the most vivid pictures that immediately comes to your mind is a golfer with a club practicing his swing. Although not all of the game may be played only by a swing, the swing is perhaps the most important execution of the game. This is the most difficult execution required in the game. Beginners spend months just trying to learn this very basic design. The swing requires the perfect coordination of hips, arms, hands wrist and even the legs and feet. Most people who are very avid fans of golf undergo professional instruction just to learn how to swing properly. Professional golfers even take golf lessons for several years fair to maintain their swing. For those who are gadget savvy, a golf simulator can be purchased for $50,000.00 or more.

A swing requires the rotation of the body which objective is to accelerate the club head with great speed in order to transfer the force of the club to the ball. Posture is very important when doing the swing in golf. The club must be held with both hands. As to how a club is held differs whether the player is left handed or good handed. For right handed players, the club must be held in such a way where the right hand is above the left hand, while left handed players must position their hands in this way, right hand must be below the left. With hips and knees flexed and the club head resting on the ground behind the ball, the golfer then starts to finish the succor swing and swings his hips to the honest while raising both arms which holds the club, backwards. The hips rotate to about 45 degrees and the shoulders rotates 90 degrees in the backstroke. The golfer’s body weight is shifted to the right side and the club is pointed toward the intended direction of the ball. After such complicated posture is achieved the golfer starts to execute the down swing which is unbiased a reverse of the back swing. The club then slams into the ball and the ball is sent flying in the air. The arms, hips and body is then rotated to the left while the entire weight of the body is shifted to the left. Both the golfer’s hand are placed above the left shoulder while the club hangs at the golfer’s back.

The importance of the swing cannot be further emphasized. Without a doubt it can be said that increase in power means increase in club head speed and the faster and the more force the club head transmits to the ball, the more distance the ball can veil. But force and speed may not be the only factors that is significant to obtain the perfect swing, accuracy is also of vital importance. For what is important is that the ball goes into the hole with the fewest strokes made.
With all these details it can be seen that golf is not as easy as what most people think. If you can’t perfect the swing in golf, then you might want to try another sport like dancing the swing.

When I think of Bobby Jones, I think of class, consistency and drive. The Bobby Jones brand has been limited in the past few years. You used to be able to see his name on older Callaway Golf products, or very high end golf apparel. But it has been over 15 years since the name has been on a golf club.

Jesse Ortiz, long know as the mastermind behind the famous Orlimar Tri Metal woods was asked to design the best playing, best hybrid on the market and build it bearing the Bobby Jones name. What he came out with is The Bobby Jones Hybrid.

The Bobby Jones Hybrids are a little larger than most hybrids on the market today. Their clean, classic gaze is a big hit with better players, and the higher profile with a low center of gravity is hit with golfers of all levels.

I was able to hit this club late in the Drop of 2007 and am excited to hear of a driver and fairway woods that will be out soon as well. I wish these club companies would release their clubs later in the year so I can get out and hit them without being cold!

The club itself sets up beautifully. I wanted to say at first that the head appeared to be a miniature larger and the face a little deep for my tastes, but once I got to putting a few swings on the ball, my mind was suddenly changed! The ball took off beautifully on a nice high flight even with the deeper face. This is by far not the longest hybrid on the market, but it can defiantly be moved any way you want the ball to go. From high to low, left, or right I was amazed at how easy it was to shape the ball with this club and how softly it landed on the green no matter where I was hitting it from. The deeper face really helped out of the shallow rough and prevented me from getting under the ball and hitting a pop up.

For the price of this hybrid, which is around $200, I would give it a try. It performs just as well as anything out on the market and is by far the best looking hybrid out there! I will be help with more Bobby Jones reviews as I earn a chance to get my hands on their unusual drivers and fairway woods.

Do you find yourself struggling out on the golf course at some of the basic things? Do you find yourself constantly doing one thing right then immediately following it with a mistake? If this is you, here a short guide with some tips to improving your golf game and how well you play.

First, I would suggest going to a simple course to play, and if you can’t play at a course find a driving range. While playing this round or hitting golf balls, try not to pay much attention to your score, while figuring out what you do fair and what you do wrong. For instance, some golfers can hit the ball a mile off the tee, but once they salvage end to the green, everything goes to shambles. Understanding what is good and bad about your golf game, gives you areas of improvement that can be worked on.

If you are having grief with your driver, fairway woods, or longer irons, then spend more time working on them at the driving range. Don’t just hit ball after ball on the range and not assume about what is going on. Practice your swing before and after you hit a ball. Taking notice of the ball flight and how your body is while you are swinging allows you to make the changes needed to get the apt ball flight. For your driver, if you tend to pop the ball up in the air a lot, then move the ball further back in your stance. Also, making sure that your hands are not too far open or closed can help to give you a straighter ball flight. For your longer irons, moving the ball further up in your stance can help as well.

Trouble with your short game is not hard to fix either. For some of your shorter irons, moving the ball further assist in your stance as your iron loft gets higher can aid. Most driving ranges have a practice green with bunkers and rough surrounding them. Assign a few golf balls down around the green and pick out a determined area or flag on the green. Try hit the balls as close as you can to your target while trying different types of shots, such as a flop shot or a bump and hasten. If you happen to be at your home, grab one of your favorite wedges and throw some golf balls on the ground. Pick out several targets in your yard and hit shots to them unbiased as you would if you had your own practice green. The same concept can apply to putting at the practice green. Find a target hole, and put down 5-7 golf balls. Try and hit each ball as conclude as possible, and as a test, don’t move on to a new target until each of the balls comes within around three feet of your target.

If you are struggling with your golf game, your first step is to identify what is good about your game and what can be improved on. Once you figure out your problems on the course, actions can be taken to correct the problems. Most of the time, these problems can be corrected at the driving range if the excellent attention is giving to each problem.
